Bellevue Hill CLT House #2 is an extensive alteration and addition designed by Retallack Thompson, transforming the existing residence through the introduction of a new Cross Laminated Timber structure and a series of carefully considered contemporary spaces.

At the heart of the home is a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living area connecting directly to a large rear balcony overlooking the established garden and swimming pool. A dramatic double-height void extends through the centre of the home, bringing additional volume and natural light into the primary living spaces while visually connecting the ground and upper levels.

Cross Laminated Timber forms an integral part of the new structure, with appearance-grade CLT intentionally exposed through the hallway, void and upper-level rumpus areas. The natural timber structure provides warmth and texture while expressing the construction methodology as part of the finished architecture.

The upper level incorporates additional family accommodation, a rumpus room, study and private bedroom suite, while the lower ground floor has been reworked to provide a pool lounge, sauna, bathroom and laundry with direct access to the outdoor areas.

Large areas of glazing, integrated skylights and carefully positioned openings bring natural light deep into the residence. Externally, a restrained material palette of textured render, timber-look cladding, aluminium detailing and metal roofing gives the home a refined contemporary character while complementing the retained portions of the original building.

The result is a highly considered family home that demonstrates how CLT can be successfully integrated into an existing structure, combining architectural character, efficient construction and the warmth of exposed mass timber.
