This extensive renovation and addition transformed a circa-1885 inner-city terrace into a contemporary family home while carefully retaining and celebrating its original heritage character.

Working within the constraints of a tightly accessed Surry Hills site, the project required significant structural works and meticulous planning throughout construction. Original elements were restored wherever possible, including the timber floor joists uncovered within the existing cellar, providing a direct connection to the building’s history.

Contemporary interventions sit deliberately alongside the original fabric of the home. A striking off-form concrete addition incorporates a custom upturned concrete skylight and rooftop garden, bringing natural light deep into the residence while creating a distinctive architectural feature.

Previously dark and underutilised lower-ground spaces were transformed into functional, refined living areas, while bespoke joinery, detailed tiling and carefully selected finishes are carried consistently throughout the home.

Designed by Box Design Studio, the completed residence demonstrates how heritage architecture can be sensitively adapted for contemporary living without losing the character and craftsmanship that make the original building unique.
